What repeats across all fourteen

The metro’s name is often not where its firms sit. Washington DC breaks hardest — 17 of 53 firms (32%) sit in the District itself, while 24 (45%), a clear plurality, sit in Northern Virginia alone. Los Angeles and Phoenix each carry a real second center: close to a third of Los Angeles’s 152 firms sit south of the city across Orange County, and Scottsdale alone holds 35% of Phoenix’s 48. Minneapolis is close to a misnomer as a city name — of 39 qualifying firms, exactly one sits in Saint Paul. Miami splits three ways rather than one dominant satellite: 39% sit in the city itself, 25% in Broward County, 28% in Palm Beach County.
